I always appreciated the in person meetings but for me personally, I've been unable to find the time to go.
Having said that, I wonder if it might be a good idea to try to supplement those personal meetings with web casts (with archives). I hate the idea of charging a fee, but if there is a need to do that to ensure a quality broadcast/web archive system, I think it would be worthy of people's money. I imagine that some of the webcasting systems might have discount rates for user groups or an open source version (still need to pay for bandwidth/services, etc...). But I wonder if something like that is of more interest.
