You could have always remounted /tmp:
mount -o remount,size=100m /tmp
That would have given you use of up to 100MB of RAM for /tmp
If the output is too loud, try this:
sox -V [mp3.mp3] -t au -r 8000 -U -b -c 1 -v .125 [ulaw.ulaw] resample -ql
That is the equivalent of Asterisk "quietmp3" MOH.
