Alejo,
Just a thought but have you consider using the mDNSresponder
libraries and going the Bonjour route? You could not only broadcast
the presence of the devices themselves but more specifically services
such as (and something I do using res_bonjour with Asterisk)
"Asterisk Voicemail Box" web interface, astmgr for the Asterisk
manager port, as well as IAX and SIP services. In fact, the
workstation service used by Macs (just because nobody else does,
really) simply broadcasts the machine name and IP's pointed to the
echo service (port 9). I too have considered using such an approach
however I determined that the network strain of trying to connect to
a port of every computer on the subnet was unjustifiable and could be
seen by routers/firewalls/paranoid admins as something unwanted (i.e.
virus, trojan, worm, etc), especially if there are multiple clients
searching. Furthermore it simplified my task by giving me something
that was already written for such a task and I merely had to tap in
to it.
Just my $.02.
