I too have followed a very similar path as Dave Listz and cannot figure out how to get Asterisk to send emails after a voicemail has been left. Do I need to install an MTA? Someone must have this working somewhere!

Hello everyone,

I finally got around to fixing the build system a little.

I really didn't like how hard it was to build the different "versions"
of AstLinux - Soekris, WRAP, etc. So, here is what I did...

I gutted support for some of the obscure board types and renamed that
config section. It is now called "AstLinux Target Device". As of right
now, there are only a few options. Make sure to only pick one of them,
otherwise I can't guarantee what might happen...

I moved the kernel config files out of package/linux and into various
subdirectories of target/device/*/. Basically, when you pick a target
device (wrap, net4801, or geni586) it will automatically use the proper
kernel config and even use correct grub and init config files (for
different consoles, console speeds, etc). It will also use the correct
uClibc config file so you won't get asked what type of CPU you want for
uClibc anymore!

This also made it possible to remove the various scattered AstLinux
config files in the root directory. There is only one now. Build
AstLinux like this:

cp astlinux.config .config
make oldconfig
make menuconfig (AstLinux Target Device - select one)
make

P.S. - mISDN and Sangoma support will be back soon. Thanks for your
patience!

Hi folks,

This has got to be something incredibly stupid
and obvious that I'm (not) doing, but I Just..
Can't.. See It.

I'm using AstLinux-0.4.0-sc1100.img on a net4801.
Most things are working great, but I can't figure out
how to get Asterisk to email voicemail messages.

I started out by:
- Configuring voicemail users with email addresses and
such in /etc/asterisk/voicemail.conf
- Configuring SMTP_SERVER, SMTP_DOMAIN, and
SMTP_HOSTNAME in /etc/rc.conf
but that wasn't enough.

I began trying to find the MTA that was to be
used, to try testing that directly -- but I can't
find it. How does AstLinux get email off the
box?

I've mounted AstLinux-0.4.0-sc1100.img
on a loop device and used 'find / ..' and
'grep -r ..' all over the place, but I can find
no 'ssmtp' program, no 'sendmail' program,
and no sign of anything reading the
/tmp/etc/msmtprc file that /etc/init.d/misc writes.

On the other hand, I've done
$ telnet MYMAILSERVER 25
from the net4801 and successfully sent
an email doing the HELO and so forth
by hand, so I'm fairly confident this isn't
a network/firewall issue.

People must be getting email off of
boxes running the 0.4.0 image, right?
How does it work?

Looking for any suggestions! I'm going nuts!

Thanks so much,

- Dave

Hello friends, today al try to use tftp on a soekris with astlinux 0.4.0
copy a few phone.cfg files to mnt/kd/tftpboot and reset the phone, but the phone did not receive any data from the box.

Look with ethereal and is phone is sending constant tftp requests but did not receive answer from the box
Did the same with astlinux 0.3.x and than it runs like a train.

regards,

Peter R.

Hello Everyone,

Here is the deal with AstLinux 0.4 and codec_g729a.so:

Previous versions of AstLinux (like most Linux systems) were created
with the most common Linux C library - glibc (GNU libc). glibc offers
the most application compatibility in Linux systems.

However, glibc is not well suited for small, embedded systems like
AstLinux. It tends to have rather large dynamic libraries. It also
uses quite a bit more memory when running.

Starting with AstLinux 0.4, the decision was made to start using
uclibc. uclibc is an alternative C library for small, embedded Linux
systems. It uses significantly less disk space and memory than the
traditional glibc.

codec_g729a.so is a binary for Asterisk provided by Digium that
provides support for the g729 codec within Asterisk. g729a is a
patented codec that requires royalties to the patent holders to use.
Digium has done all of this work for the benefit of the Asterisk
community. Unfortunately, they are not able to provide the source code
for this codec (for obvious reasons).

Because of all of these issues, Digium is the only practical entity
that can create a legal, working, G729 codec binary that will work in
current releases of AstLinux.

I recently asked if it would be possible for Digium to compile a
codec_g729 module against uClibc. Kevin Fleming responded and said that
if they would sell 200 licenses, it would be worth it.

How does that break down? $2000 (200*10). Here is what I am looking for:

1) If you use AstLinux (or other uClibc based systems) and have
purchased g729 licenses, read on.

2) If you use AstLinux (or other uClibc based systems) and are planning
on purchasing g729 licenses, read on.

I have setup a petition online. If either of these two points applies
to you, please sign it and provide the number of g729 licenses you have
or are looking to purchase:

P.S. - Anyone else who uses and loves uClibc (on gentoo, for instance)
will also benefit from this.

Thanks!

Hi Kristian,

On the petition web page you have the word partition instead of petition.
Once updated I will submit my vote!

Thanks for all the good work, looking forward to wanpipe!

I don't understand why Digium has to stick to this silly copy-protected
thing, when there is another well-known implementation of G.729 licensed for
noncommercial use (and available for binary download, which may or may not
infringe on the licensing terms, from a site in Latvia). At the end of the
day, if someone want to cheat using G.729 in a commercial environment
without paying royalties on the algorithm, will use that other
implementation ignoring Digium's: so what's the point? The only end result
is unnecessary grief for legitimate users...

Cheers --

Enzo

P.S. And I'm not even sure if asking for royalties on a software patent has
any legal standing outside the US: hasn't the European Parliament, last
year, rejected a bill that sought to introduce software patents?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/060524/152/gchum.html says that also the EU
Commission (i.e., the Cabinet) has now adopted the same position.

As I am using a Wrap board that does not have a USB port, I am suspecting
I need Zaprtc. I have uncommented out rtc in rc.modules but I cannot see
it in 'lsmod'. How do I load this module as I am hoping this is my
problem.

Sorry this is the 3rd email but I really want to get this fixed.
