Rich,
If it is not working even after you spoof the mac address, then perhaps
you need the cable modem. Try this:
1) Unplug the power from everything - cable modem & AstLinux machine
2) Wait at least one minute
3) Plug the cable modem back in
4) Wait for the online (or similar) light to come on
5) Plug in the AstLinux machine
