Very clear explanation, and a cool feature.

1) I created /mnt/kd/rc.conf.d/z.local.conf, (sanitized listing below)

2) remove /mnt/kd/rc.conf

3) reboot

Works like a charm, I only have a few changes from the defaults.  A  
much better setup then manually merging in the new rc.conf for each  
upgrade.
