Mark, Thanks for your suggestions; I will try the usbnet driver.
I had tried following Kristian's idea with the loading of the 'asix' to the /etc/rc.modules file per his suggestion. I also noticed on another machine that this is in fact the driver that is loaded for the module. This would be a great solution for all of us with machines with on nic card and no pci slots to add one.
