Item - merge current release Asterisk into build environment. Hmmmm ... That one is well beyond my skill level ... I am sure it can be done but I would be lost trying to do it, let alone trying to tell someone else how to ... So I wont even try to address ... Hopefully, one of the guys that hang out here with a lot more brains than I got will give it a go ...
Item - life span of typical CF card. I can tell you that when I put up my first two Astlinux (v3.0) servers more than a year ago, I bought two CF cards for each ... Because I was too stupid to know any better, I partitioned each with a 64mb boot partition, a 64mb OPT partition and a 128mb KD partition ... So the boot partition was read only, but the OPT and KD partitions were read/write ... In this setup, the CF card in the machine is pretty much being written to daily ... Most would consider this not to be a good idea but I did it anyway ... The cards were vanilla SanDisk cards, nothing fancy ... I figured the cards would wear out pretty quickly so when I setup the images I made a spare for each machine ... Figured when the first one died, I could just easily swap them out ... They never died ... About 3 months ago, I started on what for me was a pretty major upgrade ... Got some newer barebones machines, and decided to go with the latest and greatest Astlinux ... Decided to recycle the "spare" CF cards from the previous setup as they had never been used ... This time, I went with USB thumb disk scenario for the KD ... The old production 0.3.0 CF cards ??? I am still using these on my lab machines ... Reading and writing to them on a pretty regular basis ... They still seem to be going strong even after a year in production and 3 months of absolute abuse in the lab ... I have some brand new ones still in the wrapper but see no reason to open them until one of the others dies ... It may take awhile at this rate ... I suspect that in a production setup, where you write to the CF very little, the life expectancy would far exceed that of the typical high end hard drive ... I cant swear to it, but that is my opinion ... If you are shooting for the ultimate in long life, consider using a "Disk on Chip" or maybe a "Disk on Module" ... I think that these are typically rated to have a much longer duty cycle than the CF cards ... But they are QUITE expensive ... I have a 1gb "Disk on Module" in one of my machines that set me back more than $450 ... So I would not opt for this unless you have a really good reason ... The advantage to the CF card is that they are so easy to get and so cheap, you can easily afford to have multiple spares ... Same with the USB thumb drives ... While they may not last as long as some really high end components, they last long enough to be practical and when they die are really cheap to replace ... Then again, if you were going to send one to Mars ............ I want to know any caveats or special needs in order to do so. The whole point of this is that i want to use the tiny astlinux in a CF but with latest asterisk. I have no need to use the graphical system to manage asterisk or the whole idea of having a single .conf file for asterisk. I simply want to run latest asterisk but continue to this small and reliable distribution. Kris, do you do that for a fee or is something that can be done by us? Also, what is the practical (real life scenarios) duration of a CF card in read only mode and voicemail being recorded to a second partition in the CF OR voicemail being recorded to a usb disk?
