Michael,

This is not a branch of AstLinux. The Starbox-X currently runs 0.4
trunk (which was 0.4.4-rc3, which is identical to 0.4.4, which is being
released today).

The board itself is a modified version of the PC Engines WRAP board
that we had made. Modifications include:

- RTC backup battery
- USB support

Other than that, it is no different than what some of you are probably
running now - AstLinux 0.4.4-rc3 and a WRAP board. At Astricon I also
handed out a CD with each Starbox-X that includes a full VMWare image of
a CentOS 4.4 development environment with an ncurses based front end to
simplify configuration. We will be releasing the ISO image to everyone,
and I will be releasing the VMWare image on SF soon (probably tomorrow
with the 0.4.4 AstLinux VMWare image).

Star2Star hired me in February to design their VoIP offering. They had
already been experimenting with Soekris boards/AstLinux and they liked
what they had seen. I liked their approach to the marketplace and how
AstLinux could enable the architecture that we all came up with. It
seemed like a good fit.

AstLinux will always be AstLinux, and what we (Star2Star) use will
always be AstLinux. The commercial Starbox does have some custom
additions to AstLinux, but they are necessary to integrate with our
architecture. Any of the underlying features are ALWAYS put back into
AstLinux.

        Anyways, to answer your questions:

1) Not a branch
2) Not a new offering
3) Why bother - you're already using AstLinux :)

Seriously though, the Star2Star enabled (commercial) version includes
our integrated GUI (does not run on Starbox, btw), access to our
extensive infrastructure, termination, origination, technical support
(sometimes even from yours truly), proactive monitoring, etc. If you
want the full sales pitch, you can hit www.star2star.com.

Now, beyond all of the things I just mentioned, we are looking to
develop custom applications (as explained on the dev.star2star.com main
page) that integrate with (and extend) our existing infrastructure.
Some of these applications will run on the Starbox-X, some will run in
the NOC (Web/AJAX/etc type stuff), and some will run with some kind of
combination of the two. The Starbox-X was the first step in enabling a
developer community around our infrastructure, of which AstLinux is a
part of.

Basically, if you like AstLinux but...

- you are tired of dealing with fly by night VoIP providers with little
to no support

- you want some guarantee of quality

- you want GOOD technical support

- you want first class management and monitoring

- you want a completely integrated solution (provider, CPE router/etc,
phones, etc)

Then... Star2Star (the commercial version) may be for you. We are
actually looking to recruit a nationwide network of dealers. Some of
you might be interested in that.
