Carla/Tony,

        Yes, ALSA is the preferred way to support sound, although AstLinux 
doesn't support it or OSS.

        Quite frankly, I have never thought of support sound in AstLinux.  I'll 
look into EXACTLY what it would take, but my guess is:

- ALSA support
- OSS emulation (not a bad idea)
- alsa utilities

        Then, the other tricky part is making sure that the other apps support 
it.  Several apps (like flite) EXPLICITLY have sound output support 
disabled.  It may take some time to get all of these apps to 
autodetect/support ALSA/OSS output.
