I'll give you the weasel answer.  At any given time, trunk or beta may 
be broken.  It's usually quite good, but we're working on several 
changes in trunk related to udev and possibly unionfs.

Having said that, the beta branch (which is based on trunk and 
synchronized with trunk on a semi-regular basis) should be stable enough 
for testing.  Many people are using images built from trunk in 
production.  We try not to intentionally break things, but I can 
definitely say there will be some changes in the next few weeks which 
could have some brokenness.  The good thing is that after this 
brokenness is fixed, we should be ready for a 0.5 release.
