Jonathan, The ISO is made as a "left over" from having the generic device selected. As you've discovered, it doesn't actually boot. You can't boot it in VmWare, and you can't test a net5501 image in VMWare. Why? Because the net5501 is not VmWare! It is specifically configured for the net5501. There is no VGA console support (serial only). All of the devices, modules, etc are matched for the net5501. If you want to boot this on a net5501, you need to run the makeimage.sh script to create an image.
