Using a sip proxy allows for extra redundancy.  Since we supply the trunking
facilities via the WAN, we have the ability to re-route calls directly to
the branch offices in the event of a WAN failure at the main location.  The
other way, a WAN failure at he the main location renders both the main and
remote branch locations down.

Why are you registering the remote phones with a remote SIP proxy?

Why not build a VPN with m0n0Wall and have the remote handsets connect
directly to your AstLinux server at the local end? I have this solution
implemented at a local Real Estate company and it works very well.
