Another way which works for me.
When regression testing a particular version of asterisk (using Astlinux) you
can browse the SVN repository at
http://astlinux.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/astlinux/, click the tags URL for
released versions of Astlinux, click the version number URL for the particular
Astlinux version you are interested in, click the the package URL, click the
package you are interested in (in your case asterisk), click the REV. number
URL which is associated to the *.mk file (in your case asterisk.mk, click the
actual REV. number to view the file). at the top of the file you should see the
version number associated to the package you are interested in.

eg
http://astlinux.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/astlinux/tags/0.4.5/package/asterisk/asterisk.mk?revision=920&view=markup
opens the asterisk.mk file for astlinux 0.4.5 and shows ASTERISK_VERSION :=
1.2.17

Using the method above, here is a list of released Astlinux versions and
associated Asterisk/Zaptel versions
Astlinux Asterisk Zaptel
0.4.3 1.2.10 1.2.7
0.4.4 1.2.12.1 1.2.9.1
0.4.5 1.2.17 1.2.16
0.4.6 1.2.21 1.2.16
0.4.6.1 1.2.21.1 1.2.16
0.4.7 1.2.22 1.2.19
0.4.8 1.2.24 1.2.19

Hope this helps
regards Guy

You could download an ISO image. The 0.4.8 (last official release) is
available on the Astlinux sourceforge project page.

There are a few newer iso images available on my testing site:

http://www.djhsolutions.com/astlinux

The 0.5 based ISO images will have a recent (if not the latest) version
of Asterisk 1.2. The trunk based images will have Asterisk 1.4.x.
