Philip,

I doubt what you're seeing is specific to Astlinux.  I also see no 
problem is adding a "maxfail=0" to the config file (I see no reason why 
a pppoe connection shouldn't just keep retrying instead of trying X 
times then failing and dying).

You might have more luck on the rp-pppoe mailing list/forum.  The 
"Couldn't increase MTU and MRU to 1500" lines look interesting though. 
Most PPPOE connctions use 1492 as the link-mtu.
