Chris,

I see where that's coming from!  If DDHOST is defined, the 
/etc/init.d/network script will add it to /etc/hosts as follows:

   if [ -n "$DDHOST" ]; then
        echo "127.0.0.1  localhost
        $HOSTIP  $HOSTNAME.$DOMAIN $HOSTNAME
        $INTIP  $DDHOST" > /tmp/etc/hosts
   else 

        echo "127.0.0.1  localhost
        $HOSTIP  $HOSTNAME.$DOMAIN $HOSTNAME" > /tmp/etc/hosts
   fi

In most cases, this is desired.  You can override this as Tom indicated 
by creating a file /mnt/kd/hosts, but then you are responsible for 
updating it as the init script will use that file rather than 
dynamically creating one with the values from STATHOSTS etc.
