Leon, Any info on voip-info.org is outdated. Please refer to the www.astlinux.org website.
In the 0.6.x branch, unionfs was introduced and does not require anything being changed to read-write mode. It DOES require you to configure a unionfs writable partition. All of that is documented on the www.astlinux.org website. After you've done that, you can then edit /etc/rc.modules and the change will survive a reboot.
