bumping the kernel is not a simple matter.  The wifi drivers are 
maintained outside of the kernel tree as part of the wireless-compat 
package.

Building a new image from the development environment is something that 
should really be discussed on the -devel mailing list.  It may make more 
sense to continue the conversation over there.
