Yes I did use the generic i586 image and the instructions on astlinux.org.

I read that atleast one person was able to get the generic i586 image to
boot perfectly with vbox. Unfortunately I've had no such luck. And there is
no bootlog it seems. Possibly because because of the ro mount.

Any other suggestions?

Use the geni586 image for VBox, works fine.
