Dual-Core Atom systems offer great bang for the buck (euro, etc.) for AstLinux systems.
One such reference system is described in our docs: http://doc.astlinux.org/userdoc:board_jetway_nf96fl-525 With this extra CPU power over the net5501 and alix boards, comes extra heat. While the above example system may operate for years without any extra cooling, heat is electronics' enemy, so in the light of keeping it cool... Noise is annoying, so I looked for fans at 25 dBA or less noise, and usually run them below full speed to reduce noise further. All my testing is with the above reference system. 1) I first tired a "Noise Blocker" XM1 Ultra-Quiet fan. (40x40x10mm, 2.9 CFM, 2800 RPM, 11dBA). Made in Germany, (we know Germans make good stuff) but unfortunately I had one die on me. Here in the US they are about double the price of other options. The fan is quiet, not much airflow, but probably just enough for many applications when located wisely. http://www.amazon.com/NoiseBlocker-NB-BlackSilent-XM-1-40x10mm-Ultra-silent/dp/B002DG1QUM 2) I then tried a "Sunon" Super Silence MagLev Cooling Fan. (40x40x10mm, 5.3 CFM, 4500 RPM, 18 dBA) When run at 50% duty cycle for low CPU temperatures, this fan is very quite and a little more airflow than the "Noise Blocker" XM1. I haven't used it long, but it seems like a nice solution. At full speed this is noticeable in a quiet room, but undetectable if located around other fans. Appears to be a new addition to Logic Supply's inventory. http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ha40101v4 3) I also tried a 20mm "Sunon" MagLev Cooling Fan. (40x40x20mm, 8.9 CFM, 7200 RPM, 25 dBA) The extra thickness makes this fan more efficient, but somewhat noisy at full speed. When configured at 25% duty cycle at low CPU temperatures it is still noticeable in a quiet room, but is easily drown out. When located around other equipment with fans, even at 50% duty cycle this fan is not noticeable. For production systems, and super-quiet is not required, this fan seems like a good choice, a lot of air flow. Select a 25-50% duty cycle for low CPU temperatures and ramp the speed up for higher temps in your system's BIOS. http://www.logicsupply.com/products/mb40201v1 Thats my reviews, I'd be interested in others' experiences.
