That was it! Yes, show-union | grep 'apcupsd' resulted in
"/oldroot/mnt/asturw/usr/sbin/apcupsd," as you predicted.
And, after restarting UPS Daemon, there was a customary "Snoopy Dance" when my
UPS status appeared on the Status page.

The 'apcupsd' daemon from the 1.0.3 build.astlinux.org builds works fine for me.
Try this:
$ show-union | grep 'apcupsd'
If you get a resulting "/oldroot/mnt/asturw/usr/sbin/apcupsd", then that is
your problem. Fix it by removing "/oldroot/mnt/asturw/usr/sbin/apcupsd",
restart UPS Daemon and it should work straight away.
This could of happened by you inadvertently "touching" the 'apcupsd' binary
while investigating.
Let me know your results.
