im not sayng by any means ditch the net5501's.. I have plenty of them in the
field as routers, asterisk systems, etc.. albeit when I was developing product
astlinuxdidnt have glibc so I couldnt use it.. but I still very much mess
around with astlinux on my own...
I will use the net5501 in systems up to 24 simultaneous SIP calls, or 120
lines.. (we do hotels so 120 lines are just the analog lines that dont get
used for much more than wakeups or calls to the front desk)..
originally when we started a few years back the Soekris was the best Bang for
the buck and the only fanless or nearly fanless solution worth pursuing... and
yes the soekris still has a lot of appeal.. we recently went to a meeting with
a MAJOR hotel brand... as we walked in their personnell had a big flatbad cart
and said "I thought you were bringing a phone system to demo...".. my reply
"Its in my backpack..." a Soekris, small FXO / FXS gateway, and 2 aastra
endpoints / small netgear POE switch and patch cables all in my Targus
backpack... it was a nice well received demo...
for our small systems the soekris makes sense... at least right now. my only
issue is having to maintain 2 separate software streams... the Soekris as an
x86 Geode 32 bit stream and then the larger systems on Atom as an x86 64 bit
stream..
the pont to go to Atom is it doesnt increase my bottom Line and i can have one
platform / software stream..
If I truly was able to use Astlinux the above point is a non-issue since I
could just burn images for both platforms easily... and Astlinux Might
physically Work now that eGlibc is available as a toolchain, but my guess is
the moment i add my own packages to the buildroot I likely violate the GPL for
astlinux... whereas for a straight linux / asterisk solution where i havent
modified any packages / kernel nor the asterisk C-code im good with just adding
my own proprietary software utilizing the asterisk API and dont make the
lawyers cringe.. which is good because i dont like getting the evil eye (and
handing my wallet) to the lawyers..

Hi Tom,
I whipped out my hand dandy Kill-A-Watt meter:
1.8 GHz Intel dual core Atom D525 - AC line power of 23 watts (idle).
500 Mhz AMD Geode LX net5501 - AC line power of 9 watts (idle).
Tom, your fleet of net5501's will no doubt be working for you for years to
come. I think Christopher's point is if a person was starting from scratch
today, a dual core Atom system's cost is not much more than a net5501 with a
lot more performance for the future.
Both are "green" in my book. If a variable speed fan is used on the Atom, it
is very quiet under normal conditions.
