I use three ports...
eth0 to the cable modem
eth1 and eth2 are bridged together to br1.
physical port eth1 is connected to a switch which connects to all my
devices.
physical port eth2 is connected to a linksys PAP2T analog phone adapter.
The reason for the eth1/2 split is that the cable modem, astlinux (ALIX
2C3) and PAP2T are on one UPS unit that will last for hours in event of a
electric blackout. Other network components are on a different UPS unit
that has less capacity and carries a higher load. This means that I can
maintain telephone (and alarm) communication for 12+ hours... plenty of
time for me to get the generator up and running, and to let me turn off the
generator overnight. I'm in the northeast and last year electric went out
twice for an extended period due to storms.
