DSL Modem Users,

Recently our friend Michael Knill here mentioned in "PPPoE and Ethx" he had a
problem getting stats from an external DSL modem that is in "bridge" mode.
Mike was able to get it to work by enabling the "dsl-ppp-modem" Firewall Plugin
together with a "/mnt/kd/rc.elocal" script that defines an IPv4 address on the
ethernet interface that PPPoE is running on.

Question, is this a general feature others would like without having to define
a "/mnt/kd/rc.elocal" script ?

To be clear, PPPoE uses a PPP tunnel inside ethernet packets, so IP is not
used. But, if a web or telnet server is running on the DSL modem, IP must be
configured on AstLinux's PPPoE ethernet interface to communicate with the DSL
modem. The "dsl-ppp-modem" Firewall Plugin allows packets from the DSL modem
and forwards them to the LAN if desired.

The idea would be to add two new PPPoE rc.conf variables, such as...
---
## Set PPPOEIF IP address to be used with the "dsl-ppp-modem" firewall plugin
to communicate with IP services on an external DSL Modem in "bridge" mode
#PPPOEIF_IP="192.168.11.1"
#PPPOEIF_NM="255.255.255.0"
---
But, if this is an uncommon situation, then it is best to not add them since it
currently can be done with a rc.elocal script.

Comments ?

Lonnie
