Hi Michael,

Regarding:

Lanner FW-7541D Dual Core Atom Appliance
http://doc.astlinux.org/userdoc:board_lanner_fw-7541d

This newly released appliance uses the same Intel Atom D525 CPU as the other
Jetway boards use, the primary difference is there is no fan required due to
the 'heat sink' case, 6x Intel NIC's, but no standard PCI or PCIe expansion
slots as the mini-ITX boards provide. The FW-7541D's mini-PCIe slot does not
support mSATA SSD's as the Jetway NF9HQL-525 does, but it does supply all the
cables necessary for a 2.5" SATA SSD (see photo in link).

I personally purchased the Lanner FW-7541D directly from Lanner USA for $355 +
shipping, the only additionally costs are one stick of DDR3 SO-DIMM RAM and a
CF card. The box is 'beautiful', the feel, the quality, all aluminum case but
feels surprisingly heavy. The 6x NIC's are all Intel NIC's using the e1000e
Linux driver.

I did my standard iperf test, the FW-7541D will route at Gb line speed (921
Mbps) at 77% idle (via top) The same Gb line speed as with the Jetway
NF9HQL-525 but with 10% less CPU usage, crediting the Intel NIC's.

The AstLinux extra features including hardware watchdog, hwmon sensors, on/off
button and startup/shutdown sounds via the internal speaker are all supported
with our kernel.

The FW-7541D draws the same total power as the NF9HQL-525, 15 Watts. (net5501
is 9 Watts)

Summary:

The Lanner FW-7541D appears to be an excellent box for a VoIP-only AstLinux
acting as the router, with plenty of server grade Intel NIC's. The fanless
operation keeps the dust out, no fan to fail, and silent. Extremely well made.

By contrast the Jetway NF9HQL-525 provides a PCIe expansion slot, mSATA SSD
support, more generic mini-ITX design, for a somewhat lower total system price.

The biggest problem at this point is purchasing the Lanner FW-7541D. Excellent
service, but no secure web checkout, Irma called me and I had to give her my CC
info over the phone, not ideal. All other correspondence is via email.
Purchasing is currently more complicated than it should be. Possibly
logicsupply.com or mitxpc.com (mitxpc is located a few blocks from Lanner USA)
will carry this product in the future. For purchasing info start here:
http://www.lannerinc.com/Contact_Form .

Clearly there is no one best AstLinux hardware solution, but in my limited
testing, both the Lanner FW-7541D and Jetway NF9HQL-525 seem like a great fit
for AstLinux.

Lonnie
