I have been bridging eth1 and eth2 for a couple of years... but I am not
routing traffic across the interfaces on the bridge, rather the traffic is
99% of the time routed from br1 to/from eth0 which is my cable modem. As
throughput is constrained by the speed of the cable modem connection, I am
not affected by any s/w bridge overhead (at least not enough that it
matters).

Lonnie has reported on this list that he has measured up to a 15% overhead
for s/w bridge. But I don't know if this is variable based on the number
of interfaces on the bridge.

I use AstLinux as a gateway to the internet. For all internal traffic I
use a gigabit switch, connected to one of the bridge interfaces. The other
interface is connected to a single Analog ATA. This is part of my strategy
to keep a phone line up if power goes down for everything except my cable
modem, astlinux and the single ATA, the three of which are on a UPS that
can last roughly 12 hours.
