this is technically not astlinux related since the machine is question isnt an
astlinux box.. but I know there are lots of Net5501 users here so thought id
ask..
I have a second machine (out of many) that the Sandisk CF is giving me fits..
var/log/messages comes back with:
Jan 7 08:29:39 kernel: hda: ide_dma_sff_timer_expiry: DMA status (0x21)
Jan 7 08:29:49 kernel: hda: DMA timeout error
Jan 7 08:29:49 kernel: hda: dma timeout error: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Jan 7 08:29:49 kernel: hda: possibly failed opcode: 0x35
Jan 7 08:29:49 kernel: hda: DMA disabled
Jan 7 08:30:19 kernel: ide0: reset timed-out, status=0x80
Jan 7 08:30:24 kernel: hda: status timeout: status=0x80 { Busy }
Jan 7 08:30:24 kernel: hda: possibly failed opcode: 0x35
Jan 7 08:30:24 kernel: hda: drive not ready for command
Jan 7 08:30:54 kernel: ide0: reset timed-out, status=0x80
Jan 7 08:30:54 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 5050024
Jan 7 08:30:54 kernel: __ratelimit: 30 callbacks suppressed
Jan 7 08:30:54 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hda4, logical block 328853
Jan 7 08:30:54 kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on hda4
which to me would indicate an ailing CF card... booting that same net5501 and
flash up via network and running badblocks(non destructive read / write) and
fsck over and over comes back 100% clean no errors.. yet boot it up under
its own OS.. it runs for about 4 hours and dies... these errors occur and
eventually linux remounts the filesystem read-only...
im trying to figure out why the card passes all tests yet under normal
services will error.. do CF cards handle internal errors differently than
physical drives? or wave off requests if it is retrying a sector over and
over? my next move may be to disable DMA in the kernel.. though I have many
in the field similar.. I have had 2 like this fail now.. (one a few months
back)... the number of writes to the CF when I calculated out how much logging
is done per day does not amount to much at all when compared to the total
space on the Card and the free space.. it would seem negligible to me..
