I receive faxes directly on Asterisk/Astlinux which converts to a tiff and emails to me. I send faxes from a Brother multi-function printer/scanner/fax connected to Linksys/Cisco PAP2T. I have very poor success rate sending faxes. Sometimes they get through, sometimes they do not. If I fax within my local network then it work well. But if I fax out across my VoIP provider then it often fails.... sometimes without flagging an error (ie, the fax reports Sent OK but other end did not receive a complete fax). I do not know if this is a function of network jitter, latency, something else. Or wrong configuration on my PAP2T, or that the Brother MFP I use is not very good with poor connections. Whatever it is I just don't feel that I can depend on VoIP for fax.
