Hi Michael, At this point, I don't see any advantage for using "genx86_64-vm" with VMware, unless ESXi supports virtio-net NIC drivers ? The vmxnet3 NIC driver is still quite efficient.
The "genx86_64-vm" board type has advantages in both KVM and Xen hypervisors and supports virtio-pci drivers and suspend/resume kernel support. The "genx86_64-vm" standard build currently does not include major PCI related packages like Wanpipe, Rhino, HFCS cards and DAHDI card firmware. Unless people suggest otherwise, we have quite some time until 1.2.7 will be officially released. In theory, on bare metal the "genx86_64-vm" build will be slightly slower than the "genx86_64" build for kernel execution, and VMware ESXi is more bare-metal-ish then a paravirtualized VM, agree ? Some standard distributions, like CentOS 7, merge the "genx86_64-vm" kernel specifics into their standard distribution, but for embedded hardware the AstLinux philosophy has always been to try to get the most out of the hardware. For example alix/net5501 builds do not have a SMP kernel enabled as that cost 6-8% (IIRC) in performance. While the "genx86_64-vm" board type would work fine on VMware ESXi, we are still recommending the "genx86_64" board type for VMware. > PS. My VM customer has been running like a charm!
