Armin,

All /mnt/kd/rc.conf.d/*.conf files will be concatenated in alphabetical order 
into the system's runtime /etc/rc.conf configuration file.

Any backup should be stored elsewhere.

I use the System tab -> Configuration/File Backup: [Basic Configuration Files] 
as well as enabling Fossil and track incremental changes to the 
/mnt/kd/rc.conf.d/*.conf files (amount others).

Fossil is a godsend, and quite easy to learn to use.
