More info: connections without WEP work fine even after resume. 

Also if after resume I remove the mac80211 and cfg80211 modules,
in addition to the ath5k module, I can again connect to an
WEP encrypted network. So maybe this is a problem with other
drivers as well?

I am using the latest Fedora 8 with all the updates.
