ath5k wont work with -Dmadwifi. wext is the wpa driver you should use.
Not sure if its related to your problem as well, but I cant get ath5k to
play nicely with wpasupplicant with the debian 2.6.25 kernel either.
Will try building the latest ath5k out of kernel and see if it solves
it. (later tonight)
