I guess you actually have a new chipset that is not supported yet.  You
can see the MAC revision with ath_info, which is available from the
Subversion repository:

svn co https://svn.madwifi.org/ath_info/trunk ath_info

You can put your card in monitor mode to see if it received anything.
If you have another card that works in monitor mode, you can see what is
being transmitted.

I'm not aware of any troubleshooting guides.  I'm afraid the ath5k
driver needs to be improved to support your card.
