That helped! I've no idea what was wrong with my build of hostapd, but upgrading to the official package fixed it. (Well, it isn't official yet, it's just in the build system so far. But it's getting there.) So I guess the ath5k driver wasn't the problem. And asking on this list I probably only made unnecessary noise. Sorry for that.
