As ath9k works very well in 'g' mode it should have provided backward
compatibility for 'b' mode I am really not very sure about this.
Any way we will look into this.

Old ath5k ? (based on your sniffer capture).I recommend you please use
that as it is working for you.If you are using Ad-Hoc mode ath9k works
perfectly fine for 802.11'b' (ibss handled in mac80211).
