Thanks for the pointer. This 'need' is for testing the characteristics of the RF signal, and so the actual throughput is not necessarily 'important'. Since using 'test modes' of the Atheros chip set seems to be part of the 'black box' that is not divulged to the public, one has to find ways to perform tests, with what is available on the open source driver.
