Hello all, One of the attorneys from the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) has asked me to circulate an inquery to our lists. They would like to hear from anyone who has requested information on such items as student loans in alternate formats from the United States Department of Education and had their request denied. The message from DREDF follows: DREDF is interested in learning if you have had any difficulty accessing alternative formats from the U.S. Department of Education (Dep't of Ed), Federal Student Aid program. It is DREDF's understanding that the Dep't of Ed only provides alternative format versions for a limited number of its publications, rarely provides notices and communications relating to student loan statements in alternate format and fails to provide appropriate information about the availability of alternate formats to individuals with federal student loans who call their 1-800 number for help or to make requests. We need to know if you have made a request and if it has been denied. If you haven't made a request, please make one and let DREDF know what happens. If they refuse to provide you with the alternate format of your choice, we can help you file a discrimination complaint. We also want to know whether the Dep't of Ed website is accessible and whether the forms on its website are inaccessible (are they all fillable, etc.). Thanks for your attention to these concerns. Please contact Charlotte Lanvers at [email protected] or 1-800-348-4232 at your earliest convenience with any questions, comments and responses. Melanie Brunson, Esq.
