Dear Mr. Pomerantz:

The Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) provides free talking books and braille material to eligible individuals and organizations through a national network of libraries in each state and territory. Services are free to anyone unable to read standard printed material due to visual impairment, physical issues that prevent holding a book or turning pages with ease, or a certified reading disability.  NLS collections include audio recording of full content books and magazines that can be downloaded online or sent through the mail postage free.  For more information including a list of local libraries, our website is www.loc.gov/nls/.

To learn how to better serve current and eligible potential readers who may not yet know of our services, NLS is conducting a brief survey, which can be taken on the web or by telephone. We have identified your organization as one that seeks to benefit individuals who may be eligible for NLS services, so we hope that you will partner with us in promoting this survey effort.

We ask that you include information about this survey in your regular communication with your members. We will provide you tailored materials for inclusion in your newsletter, magazine, bulletins, or other means of outreach to your members. We are happy to answer questions and/or assemble materials that best suit your needs. By partnering with us in this effort and promoting this survey, you will help your members become aware of services that they may be eligible for and enjoy. It will also help us expand our understanding how to best provide reading materials in the digital age to individuals with visual and physical impairments.

We plan to conduct the survey during the months of February through April, so we are asking for help in promoting this study in materials you send to your members during this time. If you are interested and willing to participate, please let us know. The appropriate NLS person to contact by sending a response is Deborah Toomey, [email protected].

Thank you in advance for considering participation in this important project. With your help, NLS will be able to solicit suggestions and recommendations on how to improve our services. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Karen Keninger

Director
