These days it is considered perfectly acceptable to just remove the thumb 
drive.  Safely remove hardware goes back to the days of Windows 2000.  Just use 
common sense and wait a few seconds after you finish copying files so you don’t 
remove the drive while it’s still being written too.

You can try just pulling it out, but I wouldn’t advise it. Go to the folder 
that represents the drive you want to remove. Press context key and either then 
press the letter j or arrow down to safely remove hardware. Press enter and 
then pull it out when the computer says it’s safe to do so.
