This is of great interest to me, having spent the last few weeks
devising a search query syntax for a digital library which makes
extensive use of Atom/AtomPub. Have you see the Contextual Query
Language which is part of SRU?
(http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/specs/cql.html). Atom is making
inroads into the library space (note that the recently released OAI-ORE
spec has an Atom serialization http://www.openarchives.org/ore/0.1/atom)
and I would LOVE to see a well-thought out query language. Perhaps FIQL
is to OpenSearch as CQL is to SRU?? Any thoughts?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
Title : FIQL: The Feed Item Query Language
Author(s) : M. Nottingham
Filename : draft-nottingham-atompub-fiql-00.txt
Pages : 16
Date : 2007-12-18
The Feed Item Query Language is a simple but flexible, URI-friendly
syntax for expressing filters across the entries in a Web feed. It
also specifies a mechanism to allow feeds to indicate what types of
queries are supported.
A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-nottingham-atompub-fiql-00.txt".
A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.
Send a message to:

In the body type:
"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-nottingham-atompub-fiql-00.txt".
NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
how to manipulate these messages.
Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
