I'll put all solutions up on the Pace when I get time.
I think 1. is good enough myself. I imagine that perhaps a future version of XML will by default put non namespaced attributes in the default namespace, no? In which case things will work out ok in the long term.
If there are any other solutions, we should add them to the list.
