Yep, given the timescales involved, that sounds like a good pragmatic solution.

Even if Atom doesn't support it, and feeds don't use the extension,
your own database can implement something like FOAF "smushing" based
on properties of entries. If you find two entries with an author
(foaf:name) "Bill de h&#211;ra" associated (directly or indirectly)
with URI (foaf:homepage) http://www.dehora.net/journal/ then chances
are it's the same person.
