Would @xml:space be applicable if I as a producer want to be certain of a way of interpreting my content? Say, because I’m putting ASCII art in there?
No, since xml:space isn't a built-in part of XML, and isn't referenced by the atom spec. It can only be used when spec-makers (us) say it can.
