The problem with yum is that for the very first time a kmdl's parent
is installed (the non-kmdl parts, e.g. simply nvidia-graphicsXXXX) yum
sees that it needs one kmdl out of many available on the repo and
chooses one randomly. If you're lucky you already had the matching
kernel otherwise it will be pulled down.

This only happens the very first time, though. Later the
yum-plugin-kmdl takes care of installing the kmdl only for the kernels
you have installed or are doing so in the same yum command.
