It depends on the case. For example ipw3945 may be depedent on ieee80211. But when that is the case the packages pull themselves in. > I'm particularly interested in these, in case it makes a difference in the > answer: > alsa-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 > cdfs-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 > ivtv-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 > lirc-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 > nvidia-graphics9755-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 > video4linux-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 Out of these only ivtv and video4linux have some relationship. > Also, I'm not sure what the purpose of this one is: > video4linux-ivtv-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2933_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2 It contains modules from video4linux, e.g. all drivers for various capture cards. video4linux (or v4l/dvb) is the place where drivers are developed and then committed to the kernel. In that sense it contains the video (capture) system of upcoming kernels. > Does it replace the combination of ivtv-kmdl and video4linux-kmdl or > is it an additionally needed package when both of the others are > used? Up until lately they were seperate, but some time ago ivtv was committed to video4linux. But that version (ivtv 1.0.0) is too advanced for some applications to handle yet. That's why the latest packages split off video4linux-ivtv from video4linux. You only need video4linux if something is not working with your kernel, either because the kernel turned it off (some early 2.6.20 kernel rpms did that), or because your hardware is better supported by video4linux than by the kernel you use. > Thank you for whatever guidance you can provide. You're welcome. I'd say don't use video4linux unless you suspect it may help and then just try it out. -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net
