Thanks for the reply, Axel. At one stage I wondered if I was only seeing 
this because I hadn't rebooted or done something equivalent after 
installing, but it survived a reboot so I have reverted to the previous 
  version of ffmpeg on the CentOS box.  In FC10 the new version looks fine.
