My MythTV recordings only have MP3 audio if they were transcoded into MPEG4 form with the MP3 audio option. In my experience the #5900 upmixer handles such recordings well (much better than the stock code, actually; see <URL:http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/4819>), but then I don't know about one-channel audio tracks. The new bijou package (20090527), available very soon if not already out, has several improvements in the #5900 upmixer (thanks to Jean-Yves Avenard), including better channel mapping and the ability to completely disable the upmixer without recompiling.
