v4l kmdls are replacing the kernel's v4l parts, not just hd_pvr, but any other driver that may be doing v4l and is part of the v4l source tree. This means that if you need something that has been fixed/enhanced in v4l sources or more recent kernels you can get it by installing the kmdl. In general if the device works w/o the kmdl and you are not aware of something you need then the best advice is to KISS. :) Otherwise the kmdls are designed in such a way as to be easily disposable if they don't serve their cause, so you can always just try them out. Regarding hd_pvr there have been several requests in the last months to keep the v4l/mythtv etc current/patched: http://www.google.gr/search?q=%22hd+pvr%22+site%3Alists.atrpms.net Some are for RHEL/CentOS, but some are also for Fedora. > This looks significant, although it doesn't answer your question. > > http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/443692#443692 Jarod does a great job in kernel packaging, if he's onto it the bug will soon exist only in archives. :) -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net
