v4l kmdls are replacing the kernel's v4l parts, not just hd_pvr, but
any other driver that may be doing v4l and is part of the v4l source
tree.

This means that if you need something that has been fixed/enhanced in
v4l sources or more recent kernels you can get it by installing the
kmdl.

In general if the device works w/o the kmdl and you are not aware of
something you need then the best advice is to KISS. :)

Otherwise the kmdls are designed in such a way as to be easily
disposable if they don't serve their cause, so you can always just try
them out.

Regarding hd_pvr there have been several requests in the last months
to keep the v4l/mythtv etc current/patched:

Jarod does a great job in kernel packaging, if he's onto it the bug
will soon exist only in archives. :)
