Yup. Tried avidemux. It couldn't handle large 1080 resolution files. I've got
a parallel thread going on mythtv-users where I was just told that a user has
had good experience limiting his STB's output to 720p and editing the
resulting files in avidemux. I have to try it out.

I'll check out PiTiVi.
