I was helping someone some time back with a 3d graphics problem. He couldn't
get glxgears to run. He happened to be on the #fedora channel seeking help,
and at the time, none of the fedora 'gurus' in the channel had a clue as to
what the problem was.

The standard mantra was, 'it's the evil proprietary Nvidia drivers, they are
at fault'.

I was rather taken aback at this, since I had three machines running at the
time with the evil proprietary Nvidia drivers, and was experiencing absolutely
no problems. The difference in my case was, the packages were from Axel Thimm.

I suggested atrpms.net on the #fedora channel, in the open spirit that
whatever solution worked would be welcomed there. That was not the case. Any
repos not pushed by Fedora PTB, or other than the Fusion repos, or whichever
of those come first, are discouraged and considered to be just as evil as the
evil proprietary Nvidia drivers. I believe the exact words regarding atrpms
were, "Don't use that shit." Which of course then made me hell bent to do
exactly that.

I pulled the person aside to another channel and started helping them with
their problem. Within about an hour, he had all 3d opengl graphics working on
his system courtesy of Axel Thimm. Before I could stop him, he went back to
the fedora channel and reported that his system was fully functional.
Thinking of course, in the kind generous spirit that his experience would be
able to help other people in the #fedora channel. He was told in no uncertain
terms to uninstall the atrpms packages. The user was astonished at the
behavior of these 'gurus'; his response was, "But it's WORKING!"

He of course kept atrpms as his repo of choice.

Think this is an isolated incident? It is not. I recently did the exact same
thing with another user trying to get fusion ATI nonfree rpms working on his
system and he too was having the same 3d problem as the nvidia user was
having. Again, on the #fedora channel it was the evil proprietary ATI drivers
that were at fault and all his woes would be cured with the free radeon
driver. Again, I pulled this user aside and again fixed his system, but this
time I did it with the downloaded package installer from ATI/AMD.

I've got some theories regarding all this, and some of it has to do with gpl
religious nut jobs, but I wont go into that. The point is that I have been
using atrpms.net for several years now, and in that time I see the track
record of the fedora repos and I see the track record of atrpms. The
comparison is stark.

Bottom line, I trust Axel Thimm over the sacred 'rpmfusion' repos of the
theocracy any day of the week.
